Venice Exhaust and Emissions Service

Posted September 27, 2026 1:09 PM

Many Venice residents don't realize that there is more to exhaust system maintenance than just tailpipes and mufflers, if you can see smoke or if it's too loud. Exhaust service at a full-service automotive center like Car Doc On The Island is really a lot more comprehensive these days.

For example, in the U.S., the federal government required catalytic converters for all cars in 1976 and on-board emission control computers in 1990. FL and federal emissions requirements have forced manufacturers to come up with much more sophisticated ways to comply with environmental laws. This also goes for cars sold in Canada.

So, exhaust service has really become exhaust and emissions service. High-tech computer-controlled emissions devices are now necessary. And because it's so sophisticated, we recommend having your emission system checked out by a qualified technician, like the ones we have at Car Doc On The Island, regularly to make sure everything's working right – which is usually every six months or 6,000 miles/10,000 kilometers.

If your 'check engine light' comes on while you are driving around the Venice area, especially if it's flashing, then you need to bring your car into Car Doc On The Island ASAP. Chances are it's an emission related problem. Signs of exhaust or emissions trouble include difficulty starting, engine noise or smoke.

We hope this hasn't been too 'exhausting' of a discussion. Remember that a properly functioning exhaust system is for FL’s health and safety. Talk with your friendly and knowledgeable service advisor at Car Doc On The Island in Venice if you think you might need your exhaust system checked. A quick look can sure save a lot of pain down the road.

Straight Steering Starts Here

Posted September 20, 2026 12:50 PM

Wheel alignment is one of those maintenance items you probably don’t notice until something doesn’t feel quite right. But alignment plays a major role in how safely and smoothly your vehicle handles. If your wheels aren’t all pointed in the right direction, everything from steering response to tire life is affected.

Your vehicle can get out of alignment for several reasons. Everyday driving alone can gradually shift alignment angles, especially on rough or uneven roads. You can knock your suspension out of whack instantly when you hit a pothole, curb or debris on the road. Worn suspension components—like ball joints, tie rods or control arm bushings—also can contribute to misalignment over time. For instance, if you have new tires installed or suspension parts replaced without a proper alignment, that can cause uneven handling and premature wear.

Alignment service is important for many reasons. First of all, it protects your tires. Misalignment causes uneven tread wear, which shortens tire life and reduces traction. That means you’ll get less grip during braking and cornering, especially in wet conditions. Proper alignment also improves fuel efficiency by reducing rolling resistance; it helps your vehicle move more smoothly down the road.

Safety is another major factor. A vehicle that pulls to one side, wanders or has an off‑center steering wheel is harder to control, especially at higher speeds. Alignment service restores stability and steering precision.  You’ll also find it improves overall driving confidence.

To give it to you straight, wheel alignment isn’t just about comfort; it’s about safety, performance and protecting your investment. Make sure you bring your vehicle to us regularly to keep your vehicle driving straight, your tires lasting longer and your ride feeling its best.

(Timing Belt)

Posted September 13, 2026 12:41 PM

You may have heard about an important part of your vehicle's engine called a timing belt, and many know that if that belt breaks, it can cause some very serious engine problems.

Not all vehicles have them, and the ones that do generally have smaller engines.  The timing belt keeps the engine synchronized so that every time a spark plug fires, the crankshaft, camshaft, pistons, and valves are all working together.  Timing belts will eventually have to be replaced, and most vehicle manufacturers recommend when that should be.  Typically, it's around every 60,000-100,000 miles, or 100,000-160,000 km. It's a good idea to stick to your vehicle's schedule or be alert for signs that the timing belt may be failing prematurely.

Some of those symptoms? Maybe your engine won't even turn over when you try firing it up. You might hear a ticking or banging sound under the hood.  Perhaps you spot an oil leak or notice the engine misfiring.  If any of those are happening to your vehicle, we strongly advise you to bring it in to us so we can have a technician see what's causing the issue.

Again, if your timing belt breaks, it can cause serious, expensive engine damage to valves and pistons. It is far better to have the timing belt replaced before it breaks.

Replacing it is fairly involved, and other associated parts, such as the water pump, thermostat, tensioner, and idler pulleys may be replaced at the same time.  That way, your timing belt is more likely to last another 60,000-100,000 miles/100,000-160,000 km without any problems.

Timing belts are being used in fewer vehicles, with more and more using timing chains since they last longer.  If you're wondering if your vehicle has one, contact our service adviser who can check. Maybe it's time to schedule a timing belt replacement to keep your vehicle's engine parts working in harmony as they should.

I Can See Clearly (Wiper Blade Replacement)

Posted September 6, 2026 12:43 PM

Warm weather can bring severe storms, and when the rain is coming down hard, that's one time you really need to be able to see as clearly as possible out your windshield.  Having wiper blades that are fit for the job are important to maintain that safe view.

Maybe you live in a climate where you use blades made for winter weather and you have haven't changed them since the weather changed.  Those blades are made of heavier materials and don't work as well in warmer temperatures. Blades made for warm temperatures are lighter and clear water better in the warmer months.

The general rule of thumb is you should change your blades every six months, but if you use them a lot, you might have to change them more often.  A couple of signs that your blades need changing? If you are seeing streaks on the glass or hearing a chattering sound when your wipers are working, time for a new pair.

Wiper blades have cleaning windshields on vehicles for more than 100 years.  The original designs have a multi-part frame that are better for flatter windshields.  But newer vehicle designs now have curvier windshields, so a more recent design is called a blade wiper.  It's designed to conform better to the glass so cleans it better.

Conventional wipers also aren’t as aerodynamic as blade wipers. Wind buffeting can reduce the pressure they apply on the rubber to the glass.  With a spoiler as part of their design, blade wipers are pressed more tightly to the glass, an advantage in clearing water from it.

Another option is hybrid blades, essentially a conventional blade with a plastic shell around the wiper's frame that makes it more aerodynamic and, some say, gives it a more aesthetic look.

There are lots of choices, so consult our service professionals for a recommendation on which blade fits your needs—and budget—best.  Keep your eyes on the road and keep your windshield sparkling clean, rain or shine.
