Believe it or not, it's the heat. Think about it. The battery often sits in the engine compartment next to that motor generating lots of heat. That can accelerate corrosion in the battery and may even cause water in it to evaporate. That will weaken the cranking power of your battery and shorten its life span. To take care of your battery, here are a few suggestions. It's a good idea to have it checked out to see what shape it's in. At your vehicle service facility, they have diagnostic equipment that can evaluate its condition. That can help you know how long you can expect it to last before having to replace it. At the same time, you should have your charging system evaluated. If your battery is not getting charged properly, it can be in great shape but not very useful when it comes to starting your vehicle. A technician will also check the cable connections that should be free of corrosion and tight. Keep in mind that under certain conditions, a vehicle battery can cause an explosion if close to an electrical spark. This is why the safe way to go is to have a qualified, trained technician do the work. Your battery is important both in hot and cold weather. When it comes to starting your vehicle, make sure it's always up to the job. Car Doc On The Island Not-So-Common Sense (Sensor Failures)Posted August 2, 2020 11:07 AMSo your vehicle won't start. What's the first thing that comes to mind? Battery dead? Starter motor worn out? Out of gas? Well, those are all reasons that make sense. But your vehicle may be refusing to start because one of its computers is being warned that to do so might damage it. Here's how that works. You have lots of computers in your vehicle. They need to know the status of things so there are several sensors monitoring various things going on. These sensors send information to the computers that adjust the fuel and air mixture so you don't waste fuel. They know when things aren't quite right and prevent you from starting your engine if that's going to damage it. Other sensors make sure the coolant is the right temperature, check to see you are not polluting the air and make sure other electronic components are performing their tasks correctly. Here's an example of a sensor doing its job. Your engine needs oil to lubricate metal components so the friction doesn't damage them. Your engine has an oil pressure sensor that tells a computer called the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) if things are good to go or if there's something wrong, maybe the oil pressure is too low to keep things lubricated. If it is, it gives a signal for the vehicle not to start, protecting the engine. Of course, the sensors can go bad, too, with some of the same results. And so someone has to figure out if it's the sensor that's failed or if it really has detected a problem. That is the challenge for technicians with specialized equipment to decipher the signs. If a bad sensor is found, it may need to be replaced. Sometimes a thorough cleaning can do the trick. In either case, your service facility can track down the problem and get you back on the road. First time customer. I was referred to Doc Car by a customer impressed with their service. Several months ago, I bought a 2004 Jaguar S-type. Two weeks ago, in succession, I was alerted to low coolant, a check engine light, and loss of AC. Car documentation showed the oil hadn’t been changed in a year and aside from leaking, the wrong coolant/antifreeze was being used. I agreed to Doc Car offer to do a 21-point car inspection as part of an oil change, and a coolant flush. The initial inspection identified worn out tires, 20-year-old sparks plugs and numerous small leaks from worn out hoses and hose clamps. The AC problem was due to a faulty climate control unit and water pump. All brought to my attention when they took me into the shop and showed me firsthand the condition of the car and all the worn parts. Finding OEM/replacement parts for a 20-year-old car is monumental at best. Not only did they (specifically Stacy, parts guru extraordinaire) obtained all the parts and had my car running in a reasonable course of time. Although the entire staff at Car Doc are exceptional and treat you like family there are 4 that I need to single out : Adam - the dedicated mechanic who spent hours repairing the Jag. Stacy – parts service guru tracking and retrieving the water pump from Japan! Desiree – the tire expert and Michael who drove me back and forth to the shop. In my 60 years of owning cars, I have never experienced the kind of service Car Doc has provided me. And to top it off they warrant their work (except tires) for 3 years. This place is AWESOME. I had to have my car towed by AAA and they would only bring it to an authorized repair shop... Car Doc on the island. I'm so glad they did. I thought I had an expensive repair pending. They found that the real problem was a malfunctioning component and replaced it, costing a fraction of what I had budgeted.
